Make them all for $29.75!

I thought this image was great. An entire wardrobe for only $29.75! Or if you think of that today, an entire wardrobe for $455!

WOW!

Isn't sewing supposed to be cost effective? I know inflation in the 30s was through the roof, but wow, $455? I'm sure I could make all of those things for about $200 today.

    Well, I guess it depends on what patterns I had in my stash ;) The wool is probably what gets ya. But if we had to buy all those patterns now at the cost of current 30s vintage pattern prices, plus nice quality fabric I could see it.

    I'll stick to the stash ;)

    The total cost would depend on what I could find for fabric, linings and needed notions. I think I'd peg somewhere between $200 and $400.

    Thanks to the internet, I think we're spoilt for choice these days. These patterns all seem to demand what would have been smart, and presumably quite expensive fabrics at the time.

    Although I buy from the US a lot, if I'm buying in the UK, I shop at a little fabric store near me that does designer end of lines at HUGELY reduced prices. But I suspect that even there I would struggle to make all those outfits and come in at anything less than £200 in fabric alone (which would be about $325).

    It's a constant source of envy that you have access to such wonderful fabrics (new and vintage) in the US!
