I'm starting it off ligit by listing to Duran Duran on shuffle.
You know how you plan out a project only to find it put on the back burner when a different project 'calls' to you? Yeah, thats what has happened with this dress.
I was sleeping and as I often do, I think CONSTANTLY about drawings, or fabric, or combinations of the two. I popped up thinking on my NRA repro and how I was having a doozy of a time finding a fabric combination that I thought it would work with.
I really love this pattern, and I think it's so flattering, but for some reason I cant picture it in many combinations on me. Maybe I take the double breast part too seriously.
Then I remembered I have this great linen I got for $2 a pound (yay fabric district).
I actually got out of bed and made sure I set that fabric on my kitchen table to trigger my memory so I wouldn't forget. Well I didn't! The linen is an eggshell color with chocolate flecks. Its semi sheer with a stiff but clinging drape. It was a real find.
I decided to re-grade the pattern again from the original tracings so I could get a better fit with my slopers. I recall the original pattern being a very bare bones pattern, so I also had to re-draft all the facing pieces. I even made sure I put a nice large facing of white cotton for the front of the bodice because I plan on doing bound button holes again. Its a great look.
There wasn't a lot of wiggle room as far as how much fabric I had. The great thing is I only had to piece the sleeves, and because I'm going to add a cuff on them, it won't really show. The trim is some left over brown cotton I made my chocolate garter belt with.
Its all cut out and I'm planning on overlocking it today, maybe even starting construction. I figure this to be the last real summer dress of the year for me. I say that now, but who knows what else will call to me.
Have you all ever had a project call to you out of the blue? Crazy feeling, isn't it!
I have projects speaking to me all the time. they need to take a number and wait their turn instead of all shouting at once!
ReplyDeleteI love that pattern and I adore that fabric. Can hardly wait to see the finished product!
Most of my projects are ones that call to me. I need to be very disciplined go practical.
