*sigh*
There was a rash heat wave last week here in the city (Los Angeles) that has just started to taper off. It sucks being October and it being 100 degrees outside. Whatever. Along with the heat came a rash of lazy and me cussing that it was too warm to start on some fall projects. But now the weather seems to be cooling off, and my swollen ankles are so happy about that.
I've had this real cotton denim for about 4 months now. I've got denim needles, thread, and I'm rearing to go. What am I going to make? Funny you should ask.
The brown denim is a very vintage color. The color was used in a lot of work wear from the 40s. I really like the look of it, depending on what it is, more so than navy denim. And what outfit would look awesome made of this material?
OVERALLS!
I don't have an overalls pattern, but I have a great alternative! My newest repro!
This pattern is a 40s war time set consisting of high waisted slacks, a suit jacket and...wait for it... a jumper! I know, right! An awesome jumper in a 44 bust! The jacket is even marked for a big shirt if you want something a bit more casual.
This will be a great template for my idea.
I'm going to enlist Onda in this project and she's more than willing to help out. I'm going to use the slacks from the repro as the bottom but draft a removable overall top.
I plan on going all out, too: Flat felled seams, button back, cuffs, and all the trimmings.
I'm excited about this, my first fall project.
Stay tuned for progress. Yay sewing!
Sounds great! I guess you're not using a heavy demin, with styles like these? I was just a bit curious concerning your remark about a button back. What is that going to be? In my experience, buttons at the back waistband are fine, at the back of tops they're Ok, but at the back of bottoms, anywhere below the waist? Wouldn't that be the sort of nightmarish thing where your buttons snatch on unseen edges of chairs etc.?
ReplyDeleteIts a pretty heavy denim. Ive deduced in order to make the overall top removable, Ill have to make the back button up. Ill put a line of buttons up the middle seat of the trousers and the back middle of the overalls.
ReplyDeleteIve seen it a few times this way in my catalogs :)
I love the new pattern so much! Just what I was looking for. And yes please make overalls. I have yet to find a pattern for those for a stout woman and I've been wanting to make them. Thanks for helping the creativity flow. :o)
ReplyDeleteGirls everywhere who have thighs are thanking you for propagating 1940's wide-leg slacks, since commercial fashion seems to think we don't exist, or at least that we don't have the right to wear pants. Gah!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the final result!
