Same thing could apply to me working on my man's shirt. I did the sleeve plackets yesterday, and although I've done them before, I simply forgot. I mean I was lost. I totally had a brain fart, and those trite McCall instructions didn't help me much.
Does it fold here, or over this way or past this? Geeze. Because all the instructions were on the placket it was so easy to get turned around, which I did, many, many times.
Thankfully I didn't have to rip anything, but I did have to re-iron quite a bit. In the end I finally got them all figured out. They don't look the best, and Im kind of cheesed by that.
One problem was my thread kept getting choked up in the machine.
I couldn't figure out why. Its clothing weight, 100% cotton Guttermann. Grr! Sometimes some things just don't want to be sewn easily.
But I'l take one for the team.
More shirt tomorrow!
I think your placket looks great and I know what you mean about the trite instructions.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it kept choking on the bulk of the seams? You're stitching pretty close to the edge there, which usually means the feed dogs need a little bit of extra help because they can't fully grip the fabric. I use a little pointed awl to poke the fabric along under the foot.
LOL @ the spelling thing - a few years ago during a v. tired and busy week at work I spent 30mins late one afternoon unable to spell the word "yet" (I know!). In the end I had to suck it up and ask a colleague how to spell it; it was like my brain had waved a little white flag and left the building leaving my poor tired body behind to carry on the slog.
ReplyDeleteThe placket looks great from here. Shelley, I see a vintage Singer straight stitcher in your future!
ReplyDeleteThank, y'all. I honestly have no idea why the thread kept chocking. I was sewing quite slowly, that is the only thing I can think of. Aw well, we live and learn :)
ReplyDeleteAnd Peter, I would LOVE a vintage machine! Absolutely! But Im stuck on space and a host of other 'can't justify it right now' notions in my head. One day, though!
I definitely agree with the others, looks great to me.
ReplyDeleteI still remember typing something in high school and having a brain fart about the word drawer. I couldn't remember how to spell it. Droor was the closest I could come up with until the fart passed.
I once forgot how to spell "and". That was a weird day in the 3rd grade.
