OH
MY
GOODNESS
Rick rack is awesome! Seriously.
I want to put it on everything now! I do! There should be rick rack shaped bread pans! I mean come on, how hard would that be? Not too hard for the hefty amount of awesome you'd get!
Rick rack is so much fun, and it looks so great in this dress.
Im almost finished with it. and plan on putting the sleeves and zipper in later today.
The linen works well with the vintage striped cotton. Im adding rick rack trimmed pockets (a last minute decisions).
Ive also cut out my next dress. No rick rack for this one (although Im tempted).
More to come!
Ric Rac is great, although I'm not so much of a fan when it is just appliqued on. My aunt warned me about it though...she grew up in the 60s and her mom made everything with rick rack and she said all the little "teeth" fold down after being washed so it takes a lot of ironing.
ReplyDeleteI cannot begin to tell you how much I love ric-rac trim. I want to put it on virtually everything. Which is rather funny since only a few years ago it was a memeory of my childhood in the 70s that I didn't care much to revive.
ReplyDeleteI also adore ric-rac! A girlfriend of mine gave me a huge box of vintage 70's ric-rac. I don't use it as much as I'd like to but sometimes I get the box out and flip through all of the packages to look at the pretty colors and textures. You know what else I love- piping!!

That is gorgeous! I made a dress with rick-rack recently and had a bit of a problem getting it on straight, do you have any tips and tricks to share?
ReplyDeleteGreat usage of the rickrack! I like how you used it as a piping accent. did you pre-wash it? I have some of uncertain vintage and I'm not certain if it will run in the laundry....I enjoy reading your blog and watching you create such wonderful clothing!

Monika--baste, baste, baste. It takes longer to start out, but it will save you loads of time and irritation in ripping and re-positioning.
ReplyDeleteOh, dont get me started on my love of piping. Mmm piping.
ReplyDeleteThis ric rac was 100% cotton, so I washed it with my darks.
All my dresses are adjusted to 1/2" seam allowance, and the overlocked edge makes for a good landing for the ric rac. I butt it up right against the top of the serger edge, lay the other piece of fabric over it and presto, the ric rac is right on my stitching line. I love it when things work out like that!
I am always impressed with your fabric choices! Check out some of the "squaw dress" patterns on Etsy for some great rick rack ideas.
ReplyDeleteAhh! thank you for the the answer about pre-washing the ric rac. I will check and see what I have in my stash and I'll plan accordingly.

Thanks for your tips! I did baste but not well enough - next time I'll probably trim the seam allowance so i can just line it up. At least if I put it on a collar again where the seam allowance is going to be trimmed anyway.
ReplyDeleteGreat job...I love ric rak too...and I love this dress!
