Making the Bra Pt 4

My hair after 3 hours of dancing last night! What!! It was a sponge last night, soaking up everything and not releasing any moisture. Went into class looking cute, came out a big cotton ball :)

I never realize how many freckles I have until someone points them out.
Oh, the bra, right!

I finished the 'wearable mock- up' and I am very pleased with the result.
What I did was cut down the point of the cup a tad more for my own personal sanity. There is no real stretch to the fabric, so the subtle softness of the seam is, um, lost...

For this one I applied the flat felled seams, which were easy with the 1/2" SA because of how thin this cotton is.

I also overlocked the edges that were not seamed and did a simple turn under with a zig-zag stitch to account for any give that I may need.

What I did was add some power net to the side seams. This old shaper had this great edge elastic that I have to find somewhere! Its perfect for finishing, well, an edge of powernet or any stretch fabric.

I cannibalized a shaper that didn't work and said, "Hey, I can use these hook and eyes too!" I did.

Here are my mistakes.

I still cut the bra down too far beneath the arm for my liking. On the next one (already cut out) I hope I remedied this problem.

The bra is still a bit too pointy for me.

The hook and eyes, although they look cool, were just to see how they would work. I think I'm going to do button holes on the future ones. Or perhaps a metal zipper. That would be hard core.

I still have to make the top of the bra cut come over a bit more. See?

Even though that gap is well in the SA when I add the binding, I'm not pleased with it. It's a luxury adjustment now that I have the fit done pretty well.

Speaking of fit, if you see the way it looks on Onda it's telling you I made it too large, which I did. I can omit a good inch in the waist and the straps can be a good 2" shorter. The straps are comfy by the way.

Also, I think I used a stretch fabric (the blue/black calico) because it had more 'give' than I was expecting which in turn added to it's extra size. This challenge of form fitting is new to me. I'm having to really, really go by the letter on my size. and I'm used to giving myself half an inch here, an inch there. When I get to the corset, I'll have to have that new mentality.

As an overall assessment of this particular bra, I'd say its a solid B. I'm aiming for A. I went back and altered the pattern and got the other pieces ready. I'm going to work on that today, and perhaps get it all worked out by tomorrow.

I'm dancing again tonight, then again on Thursday where I'm going to give 2 doz vegan Red Velvet cupcakes. Mmmmm.

So much to do!

By the by, are people having a problem posting comments?
I checked my setup and its fine. You do need some sort of registration to leave a comment, Google, Livejournal, etc. Thanks for all the emails, they are very encouraging. Let me know what questions you are having on this and I will do my best to respond.

Have a great day and dance if you can! :D

  3. I've been following your blog for the last 6-8 months and find it very helpful. Suppose I'd better start commenting lest you get the idea no one is reading... :) Actually, I've been considering purchasing this pattern, but it is bigger than I am and I've never been good with much past very basic adjustments. Getting the needed, close body-skimming fit of a bra while still being able to move while wearing it is not quite intimidating, but... And I don't have my very own version of Onda. I know: Excuses, excuses. My problem is usually that I just overthink a project. But I'll be studying your posts for a while to work up the nerve to give it a try.

  4. Thanks Veronica. Onda cost $20 and a tape buddy. Get-her-done! :D
