I finished the chair. W00T!!

So... this happened.

I went to the Greyhound depot that my couch frame was supposed to be delivered to, and I saw this. From the looks of the place, it seems this station has been closed for a few weeks, if not months. I saw light on inside, but that could just be for security reasons.

I called the main branch in downtown and left another message basically saying I want my item, not the insurance and that it was one of a kind. We will see what happens.

Right now the other four cushions are stacked in my sparse bedroom.

But my chair is keeping them company.

I decided to recover my chrome chair to match the couch. The seat comes off rather easily with three screws, but it's the back of the chair that's a challenge.

That piece is made of a bent piece of wood and time and I'm sure quite a few rough people have weaker the wood past its prime. Screws no longer had anything to screw into. Craig, my friend who helped with the couch restoration, told me that all I needed to do was cover the back of the piece with something for the screws to catch into.

I bought a piece of craft wood for $2 and soaked it in water. I then bowed the wood so it would dry with a curve. I then re-wet the dried craft wood and used Gorilla Glue to adhere it to the back of the old wood.Gorilla Glue expands with moisture and seals itself into whatever its being bonded with. It worked like a charm.

Once that had dried for 16 hours I decided to cover the piece with fabric. I hand stitched it on, and once I finished and tried to put the metal backing on, I realized the bumps of the dried glue would not allow the plate to lay flat. See, in my mind, I knew I wanted to pads that part with filler, but I just didn't. So I ripped off the stitches and stuffed it with padding. Then presto, it all went on like a charm.
Padding on the sides.

The chair is complete and looks so bad ass in my bedroom. I'm planning on using it as a reading chair. I have my eye on another one but with my luck with the couch, I'm reluctant.

The metal place of the chair.
What happened when I opened the box of screws.

I am thrilled with the outcome of these furniture projects. They have been such an adventure. Now I can get back to clothing. Well, I have one more kind of project, covering my fabric shelf with canvas. All I need to do is order the zippers. I'll do that project in the coming weeks.

So how about all of you?
How many non clothing sewing projects have you completed?

  1. Wow, that looks fabulous! Must make you happy every time you see it :)
I've never heard of "craft wood"...what is it? When I googled it just now, I found a lot of companies, but not a product. I didn't know it was possible to get that kind of bend in a piece of wood without a fancy steam set-up, and it would b a good thing to know. Thanks!

  2. Quinn, the back of the chair is the same as the old wood, I just added a thin piece of wood across it. I got the craft wood at an art store. It's less than 1/4" thick.

  3. What a wonderful job you did! Love it!

And I can relate to the 'screw' picture :) Only picture it with pins...
