Catalog Sunday

This Sunday its Chicago Mail Order 1933.

New Pattern Day Yay!!!

Finally, I have it completed!
My hat repro!

This quartet has stylish hats all different from each other. You know how some hat patterns interchange the same pieces to make up different styles? Not this pattern. It's a great value!

PLUS it's a 30s hat pattern! WHOOOO!
Oh! Oh! AND it's a 23" head! DOOOOD!!!
The pattern is currently in my Etsy store.
Why haven't you bought this pattern yet?

Thanks everyone and have a great Friday!!

Catalog Sunday

Sorry for the lateness today, I thought I had one in the cue.
The booklet was oversized, so it's photos today.

Catalog Sunday

This Sunday I'm getting out more early 30s images.
These are from two of my embroidery catalogs by Frederick Herrschner.

I need a dress to match this purse!

Wait, isn't that sentence backwards?
Not if you sew.

Taking a slight pause form Air Raid updates to talk about my latest find.
One sleepless night last week I decided to type in an NRA search on eBay. I do that from time to time but with no impulse I just went for it at around 3 in the morning. Well, the page loads and I find this purse newly listed with a buy it now price of $9.

*gasp*

The listing said it was NRA marked, but didn't show the tag, nor did it list dimensions. I mulled it over for about 12 seconds and took the leap.

It arrived yesterday.

I could not believe it! Yes! It's got an NRA tag sewn in it.

The light colored silk lining is immaculate, the pattern outer fabric is in perfect shape and the bag even smelled good! $9!

The bag is about 7x10", perfect for holding all my modern stuff.
The chain is in great shape as is the clasp. $9!

I hope it's not haunted or something.
Look at that pattern. The fabric is textured, too thin for carpet. Perhaps a silk or rayon?

I love how there are pieces sewn at the sides of the bag to give it depth. Don't you just love all that extra care they put into things back then.

In any account, I have to make a dress for this bag. I'm thinking of accenting the brick and navy colors.

Here are the patterns I've narrowed it down to.

I'm personally leaning toward the 2961 (the first pattern) because I like the idea of having a jacket with the ensemble. This might even be a great outfit to wear to Gatsby.

What do you all think? Any other pattern you would suggest? Fabrics? This might turn out to be quite an adventure for me :)

Linen NRA dress, a daytime version concluded.

It turned out pretty well. I like the buttons and the accessories keep the dress from looking like a maid's uniform.

When I was taking the photos, I couldn't help but think of this photograph. My great Grandmother is the one in the light colored dress.

A few more pictures of the linen dress are on NVL.

Linen NRA dress, a daytime version's progress.

It's been a while since I did a progress report on this dress. Mainly because every time I tried to start on it I got side tracked. Yesterday I dedicated most of the afternoon to working on it with only a distraction of taking Georgia for walkies to pick up some dog food.

I managed to piece together the front and back gores of the skirt. I construct my dresses rather unconventionally. In order to have good line up of the sides, I always attach the back of the bodice to its skirt, and the front to its, and then match them by the waist seam and sew both sides of the dress in one swoop (well, two really). That way I get to work out any unevenness of the arm holes or drape of the skirt and not have to worry much about pulling from a seam that might be a bit slanted if I were to attach the skirt to a finished bodice.

This bodice, because of its one piece shawl collar was a bit of a hassle. I had to construct the shoulders of the bodice, and for a bit of stability, I sewed down the side seams about half way. I really hate having to re-sew an area, like I'll have to do with the sides once I make the entire dress. Its a lot of duplicate sewing, and that's a personal peeve of mine.

Generally when I sew, I try and mentally work out a process that will have me make the fewest construction stitches as I can. That does not always work, but its a fun mental exercise to do none the less.

I wish I would have been able to do that with the bound button holes.

They went as you would expect. I didn't mean that sarcastically. They were fairly uneventful. I did narrow a few of the stitches, but thats no big deal for the number of them I did on this bodice.

Once I cut them open and turned them right side in, I hand tacked the fabric to the back facing.

Then I marked the placement on the facing for the button holes, sewed machine button holes in that piece and matched it to the bodice.

I sandwiched the bodice, collar, and facings together and sewed in one pass, yeah! I then notched where it needed to be notched and flipped everything the right way in, or out, or a round. Whatever. Finally I hand tacked the sewn button hole piece to the back of the bound holes.

Ta-da!

After that I pinned the skirt to its respective partners and I'm waiting for daylight to sew it all up.

I really like the collar on this one.

I paid a bit more attention to the drape as it was on the pattern envelope and using my slopers for fit (yay slopers!) I did raise the bottom up just a bit after the fact because it was covering one of the button holes.

I love the way it hugs my upper bust. Mmmm.

Finishing up a few smaller parts of the dress, I managed to complete the cuffs as well. The pieced sleeves are a bit uneven compared to the cuffs, but thats not a big deal at all. I think Im going to cut that part down and pretty it up with some soft cotton lace before I turn it inside and tack it down.

Even found the perfect buttons to work with this dress.

They are late 50s, but they are the right size and color so big whoop. I do like the box, and the note on the bottom.

Working on this dress has made me think of some...not lost projects, but some I've put on the back burner these past weeks.

My black plaid skirt.

I stopped working on this one because I used a zipper that does not have a locking pull so it kept opening it every time I put it on and I don't want to take it out. I think I'll use a hook and eye as a stopper, but I don't think that will work right well.

My drafted cloche.

Stopped working on this one because it was too warm for a flipping hat. Oh how the seasons have changed.

My ticking girdle.

I stopped working on this one because Aunt Flow was visiting (FLOW!!!). Never make a girdle when she's in town. There is no quicker way to make you feel gross about your body than that. I decided to try it on yesterday just for kicks and when I was first working on it, it took me 20 years to get it all hooked up. I managed this time in a couple of minutes! So now I have new motivation to finish it.

I think I'm going to take this month to knock these projects out.

Linen NRA dress, a daytime version.

Happy new week everyone!
I'm starting it off ligit by listing to Duran Duran on shuffle.

You know how you plan out a project only to find it put on the back burner when a different project 'calls' to you? Yeah, thats what has happened with this dress.

I was sleeping and as I often do, I think CONSTANTLY about drawings, or fabric, or combinations of the two. I popped up thinking on my NRA repro and how I was having a doozy of a time finding a fabric combination that I thought it would work with.

I really love this pattern, and I think it's so flattering, but for some reason I cant picture it in many combinations on me. Maybe I take the double breast part too seriously.

Then I remembered I have this great linen I got for $2 a pound (yay fabric district).

I actually got out of bed and made sure I set that fabric on my kitchen table to trigger my memory so I wouldn't forget. Well I didn't! The linen is an eggshell color with chocolate flecks. Its semi sheer with a stiff but clinging drape. It was a real find.

I decided to re-grade the pattern again from the original tracings so I could get a better fit with my slopers. I recall the original pattern being a very bare bones pattern, so I also had to re-draft all the facing pieces. I even made sure I put a nice large facing of white cotton for the front of the bodice because I plan on doing bound button holes again. Its a great look.

There wasn't a lot of wiggle room as far as how much fabric I had. The great thing is I only had to piece the sleeves, and because I'm going to add a cuff on them, it won't really show. The trim is some left over brown cotton I made my chocolate garter belt with.

Its all cut out and I'm planning on overlocking it today, maybe even starting construction. I figure this to be the last real summer dress of the year for me. I say that now, but who knows what else will call to me.

Have you all ever had a project call to you out of the blue? Crazy feeling, isn't it!
