Day Project: Kumquat preserves!

A co-worker and I were talking about fruit. More our love of fresh foods in any capacity. I've never been a big fruit eater (I prefer veggies), but with the juicing and my CSA, I'm just a yacking machine about this kind of stuff.

"My Grandmother has a kumquat tree in her yard. I'll bring you some," my co-worker said. I walk into the office that Friday morning to a ten pound bag of fresh kumquats! Wow, I said. Thanks!

What the hell was I gonna do with all this freggin' fruit!? Yeah, I asked for it, but truth be told, I'd never really had much experience with kumquats.

Weekending Cool Colors

It's Friday. Enough said.

I was flipping through some of my phone  photos and 

just compiled a few I took this past week that popped.

I recently got a juicer, so I've been putting any and every veggie in it!

The colors are amazing!

This one is apple, orange, carrot, and ginger.

I thank you for tolerating my hiatus this past week as I got on the ball and moved into my 20s apartment!

Progress, progress, progress.

Hey everyone! I've had my hands in quite a few things these past few days so sorry for the MIA-ness.

One good thing is I started on some of my underthings. Well, I cut out some of them anyway. I got this white poplin a while ago I was going to use for mockups but in taking stock of my underthings situation, I decided to use it to make some breeches. I like to wear breeches when I wear dresses with my garter belt and stockings. They are cool and comfy and keep my thighs from touching. Perfect. 

My 2010 Christmas card

Every year for a long while now I've done a custom Christmas card for family and friends. For a while I did a linoleum run (when I had access to a press) and signed and dated them. MAN I miss printmaking.

This year, like last year, I've been knee deep in Adobe Illustrator, so I decided to do a second version of last year's card, gingerbread me. It was hugely successful. Between the Lady and gingerbread me, you all must think I'm this HUGE egomaniac.

No, not at all.

No more than what's healthy, I guess...

Now I need to have some cards printed. I still have time!

Vintage Homemaking: Home baked yumm yumms.

I bake a lot. Being vegan, I almost have to. I've never been the non animal product eater who indulges in overly processed soy substitutes. I don't get the point. I don't eat meat, so I'm going to eat something that is engineered to taste like it?

I'm also pretty big opponent of modern food production. I've read a lot of the books and I've seen a lot of the documentaries on the subject, but that's for another time. Mostly I just like simple foods made with basic ingredients. I bake that way too.

For the holidays a few years ago I decided to make some vegan baked goods for my family and friends. I made a whole wheat bread and a cinnamon sweet bread loaf.

I'm all about presentation, so I made some 'feed sack' pouches for the breads, and scanned some of my old button cards, photoshopped the recipes onto them, then distressed the printouts to make them look old. The packages turned out great and were a big hit.

I know, a bit of a change from clothing, but this Wards Catalog from winter 1927 was just too fascinating. Some of the brands in it are still available.
