Hi all! Hope you had a great weekend.
I spent my weekend drafting a pattern and making a slew of hats.

The second satchel bag is complete - with a MONOGRAM!!
Hello lovely people.
I made the satchel again using a maroon colored denim and a light cotton plaid curtain I got from the thrift store. I felt extra special and cut the inside lining on the bias.
So how many men's pajama patterns do you really have?
I'm so glad I can answer a question no one asked.
I suppose 'why' would be the question to ask that no one asked, but I'm at a loss as to why I currently own 5 men's jimjam patterns. And YES, I know the lower left DuBarry is a onesie, but come on, it's a onesie!!
Let's stop with the random.
"Hey Shelley, what DID you do this weekend?"
Pictures of my new purple jeans!
I hemmed these puppies this morning right before work.
I'm really pleased with the fit, though I could have taken in the waist about one more inch. Still, these feel so much better than those big old jeans I was wearing. It's so strange, the previous jeans were tight when I first made them. Oh well.

Eat, sleep, sew, work, dance.....
Not in any particular order.
I'm sure you lovely people are tired of me saying how busy I've been. Even though it's true, still, I should have let you know :)
Your to do lists.
Everyday in my mind I conjure up a simple to do list of odds and ends that need to be completed that day. Actually, I'm a very list oriented person, and I find I make tons of to do lists, micromanaged down to the hour. All in my head, all actually doable.
The problem I have is I get lazy, or rather, I get a case of the 'do it later's. "I can wash my hair tomorrow night." "I can do laundry on the weekend." "I'll list that pattern in etsy tomorrow." "I'll sweep the apartment next week." Etcetera. I beat myself up about it all the time. I could have done more, I can push myself to keep going. I actually want to keep going.

Alterations alterations.
The loveseat restoration is coming along. This is the SECOND soak of the cushions. You don't wanna see the water color of the first soak.
Weird feeling weekend.
Happy Tuesday lovely people.
I hope your week is going well and you just aren't hoping to get through it as quickly as you can so you can enjoy your next weekend.
Hey, we have all been there.
My past weekend was strange, emotionally. I mean, I felt fine, but I was just sad. I'm not sure as why. I constantly reflect on the good things that have happened to me lately, and sometimes I feel I don't deserve them, but I just felt totally lonely and sad this past Saturday and Sunday.
The wave has passed and I feel fine now, but it was strange to have a sudden bout of heaviness like that.
A bit about me.
I was diagnosed with severe depression around 2004. With the help of my doctor and some meds, I was able to get back on track and here I am today, a regulated happy person. That weekend sadness felt routine, I guess, but still it was odd.
In any account I tried to keep myself busy over the weekend. I didn't have any pressing plans so I just stayed at home and set up the rest of my stuff.
My framed picture is up!
The framing store called and my piece was ready for pickup!
I could not wait to get it home and hang it. The frame is custom made, and the matting is a shimmery linen. I love the look, though, it looks rather underwhelming in this picture :)
A sailboat broadcloth shirt? It's as awesome as it sounds!
Hey! Check out this write up of me on Blue Gardenia!
Although I feel the awesomeness of this broadcloth was expressed in my previous dress, I do feel that it's causal form is just as eye catching.

Pants pants pants party!
Taking a post brake from Man Month to show my new jeans. I based them from my 40s repro pattern and I'm finally happy with the fit. I slimed down the leg a bit because the original width of the cuff was monstrous. Even slimed down the width of the cuff is still 20" around!
The first pair I made are with the orange jean thread. They are my new kick around pants.
Wardrobe deficit: Awesome vintage shoes.
If there is one thing I'm pretty girl about, its shoes. I'm girl, but I'm practical. You won't catch my cubby ass in a pair of 5" stilettos. Not that I wouldn't work them like nobody's business, but I'd rather not fall and brake my neck.
I do like gal shoes, a lot, but I have this need to not want my feet to hurt after standing in them for 10 minutes. Oh, if men knew what we did to our feet in order to make our calves look all hot.
As you can see, my normal run around shoes are in severe need of replacing. As I steer my footwear to a more vintage slant, I remember buying these Bass shoes from Mervyn's about 4 years ago for all of $8 each pair. I LOVE them. They have a 50s vibe, and the thick soles are so comfortable. I've tossed these bad boys in the washer and none of the rubber ever came unglued.
I love the denim pair, nice and broken in. Too broken in. They have holes at the creases now. Yeah, it's time to replace them.
I wanted some basic canvis kicks that I could walk a long time in and not have to worry about my toes. Some that I could wear thick socks with. Some that were not so thin that I'd feel pavement after 6 months.
I have a couple pair of old Converse, pre Nike. I'm kind of over this shoe brand. I know it seems kind of silly, but the magic of chucks faded when Nike bought the brand.
I decided to look into PF Flyers. They were bought by New Balance.
PF Flyers have been around for ages, and lo and behold, they came out with a reissue line a few years ago. I have a pair of canvas wing tips from them I got nearly 4 years ago and I could not get over the awesome kitschy vintage box they came in. I store sewing stuff in it now.

I LOVED them the moment I tried them on. So awesome and comfy because PF Flyers have a removable arch support in all their sport shoes. I'm not a total arch support needing person (I have regular arches), but these are just like walking on clouds.

Gotta love Amazon even more.
I found a 40s styled Grounder-Lo version that the PF FLyer website discontinued a few years ago.

I expected only super tiny sizes to remain, as I'm a pretty standard 9 1/2-10 in women's, 8 in men's. That size was there! I was shocked! I bought two pairs!
When they arrived I squeeded like a kid when I found they were in the same kitschy vintage box my Flyers wing tips came in! Not to mention they were half the price of the ones at Zappos. Sorry Zappos.
I made a pledge to myself a while ago to invest in shoes, not simply buy them. I was tired of getting 3 cheap pairs only to not wear them because my feet hurt, and forgoing that three figure pair of shoes because they were too pricy. As a result of this pledge, my shoe selection is pretty skimpy.
It's always been skimpy. I'm picky. I haven't bought leather shoes in probably 10 years. It's the vegan in me. Don't get me started on my own personal hypocrite soap box. I figured I had done my part, paid my dues and decided on getting some cow skin for my feet after all these years.
*sigh*
Every girl needs a pair of saddle shoes. I think it's written somewhere. Of course when I decided to get some saddies, I went to Muffys. I selected a pair styled from the 30s with a white rubber sole. They came before Christmas, but the left one was damaged, and just like the champs they are, they promptly sent me a replacement shoe.

I haven't worn leather shoes in years, so I'll have to get used to the braking in process. I'm most likely going to do the alcohol soaked socks and wear them around the house for 30 min. In any case I'm excited about them. I'm just excited about new shoes.
It's not like I don't want girlie shoes to go with my dresses. I do! I tried on a few pairs of dance shoes (thanks Zappos) because they are often styled from vintage designs with a workable heel, but didn't find any that were to my liking. Im saving to get some Re-Mix shoes. Their showroom isn't too far from me (don't judge the shoes by their horrible website). For all those in the 'scene', Re-Mix is the place to go for vintage styled shoes. *sigh* Their 30's shoes DO something to me, if you know what I mean.
This adventure is far from over. I have a lot of shoes to try on and if time is on my side, I'm more than willing to take up the cause.
If not for me, for America!

But I digress.

Gotta love Zappos. I picked up a pair of their center-los that are styled from their early 50s sport shoe.
The rubber soles are thick and the canvas is lined. They are great.

Jeans progress.
Tonight I'm listening to Rufus Wainwright.
He does one of THE BEST versions of Hallelujah I've ever come across.

I cut the shape out fine, but I didn't adjust the grain line when I omitted the darts. So the pieces are on the bias. Not a huge failure, but its not exactly what I wanted. You live and learn, right?

Nearly finished with my blue jeans. I haven't broken a needle yet!
I totally know I just jinxed myself.
They are going well. I learned a lot from my overalls. I cut the flat felled seams a bit deeper on this pair so I'd have more fabric to fold under and that has made all the difference.
I did make a blunder on the back yoke.
Here I am trying to be cute and put in a change pocket.
I hope to get these done tomorrow (today), because I want to get started on another blouse.
Also in the pipe line is my post on burn testing and another vintage homemaking installment. Stay posted!
Catalog Sunday
This Sunday I have denim. All denim all the time.
Well, the time of the mid 30s to mid 40s.
It's long sleeve blouse progress & jeans, too.
Work, work, working on the blouse.
I overlocked all the pieces until my serger quit on me. For good this time.
Crap.
I had to finish the rest of the pieces with a ziz-zag stitch.
This being the first time I've made this pattern, my adjustments were not the greatest.
I added a bit too much to the gathered bust and I plan on cutting that area down by 2" on the next go round. Also, because my shoulders are more narrow than the pattern, I had to cut down the front yoke by a good 1 1/2". I was worried that was too much, but the blouse hangs great.
Whew.
Even with the snafus in the altering of the pattern, I can't stress enough the benefit of slopers. It's like I can alter a pattern with my eyes closed. No thinking involved! Fantastic!
As I was finishing up the rest of the blouse for the day, I decided to go on and start my second pair of jeans.
I have a black pair of denim jeans I made that I've worn for years. They are my rough and tumbles, and I need to replace them. I have this great blue denim in my stash and it took only about 30 minutes to cut out the pieces.
I'm changing up the pattern a bit (I'm using the slacks from my 40s slacks repro), and I'm adding a yoke to the back.
I cut the pattern past the darts, closed the darts, then redrafted the yoke piece. I think it's going to work out splendidly!
This is the perfect project to do since I don't have a serger right now.
AW MAN I MISS IT ALREADY!!!
