What to Wear Beneath what You Wear to an Air Raid

The Air Raid isn't too far off. We are talking a couple of weeks and it's time to prepare! I'm getting my Warden outfit together, going to make the arm band soon. I'm deciding on what my second wardrobe change is going to be and I think I'm going to wear separates. The blouse will be my palm tree rayon, and I'm working on the skirt too. Things are coming together.

But the Air Raid is outside, and I've been there and it can get cold, so I figure it's time I addressed my undergarment situation seeing as I don't want my bottom to freeze.

I need to work on making undergarments anyway. It's one of my deficits. Actually loungewear and undergarments are big holes in my wardrobe. I think I'm going to work on those for the rest of the month.

I pulled out all of my cotton flannel for jim jam pants. Mmmm, toasty.

I decided to pull out a couple of my slip patterns and whip some up. I narrowed it down to the one I'm sick of seeing, and another princess seamed one. I think you can tell which one I chose.

I looked through my stash and grabbed a few yards of this heavy fabric I had. I didn't know what it's content was so I did a burn test. I was totally surprised to discover that it was not a polly blend. It appears to be a cotton/rayon blend, more heavy on the cotton. Yay! It's a bit brushed so that was the side that I'll put on the inside.

I sized up the pattern, just a bit, then cut out the pieces.

By the by, tomato paste cans make *great* fabric weights. I realized I was glad that I used this fabric for a slip because it's off the grain.

I'm also glad I caught that after the second piece which was on grain. It was strange, like the grain was all wobbly. It's a slip, so I'm not too worried about it. It's not so bad that I have to worry about twisting. The fabric isn't the best for my skin tone anyway, so a slip it shall be.

I could have finished this thing in one day but I started it at 4pm, and after working with the pattern it just got too late to sew. It's all pinned and ready to go, so I'm calling this a day project. I think I'll make a couple more of these, maybe even add short sleeves to another one, if not this one.

I know this will do the trick at keeping me warm. I'm getting excited!

Catalog Sunday

This Sunday I have images from my winter 1938-39 Lane Bryant Catalog.

My weekends of Vintage fun.

These past two weekends have been a big batch of fun.

This past Saturday was the opening of a new vintage themed club, The ChitChat Club. Apparently they had a previous location but had to close down. It was a buzz all over the vintage 'scene' about this place opening, so I decided to check it out.

I decided to wear my brick wool crepe dress. It's 40s, and not too flashy for public transit. I used to live in the neighborhood of the new location, so I took the subway there.

*This is the post cubby wall from the old reception desk.*

Apparently the old building is being restored and this club is located in one of their three ballrooms. The space was beautiful and the club was located on the lower floor. What I couldn't quite tell was if this space was permanent or not, because the bar was just a tiny corner in the back.

Oh the bar...Not only was the line a mile long, there were only 2 bartenders AND NONE OF THEM KNEW THE DRINK MENU!!! I mean the menu was filled with special concoctions, and they didn't know any of the recipes. I mean there were owner created recipes and the bartenders were reading off sheets.
How tacky is that?

The night did have some fun parts even though it opened an hour late. I almost wanted some of my cover charge back for that. There was a projectionist who played some vintage jazz shorts from the 20s and 30s. Those were great. Also, the band Stompy Jones was a hit. Honestly if it were not for the band, I think the night would have sucked. As far as openings goes, it was so much fun, but I wish it had been planned better.

The night did have an added bonus for me. A friend of a friend gave me a ticket to the Vintage Clothing and Textile show happening in Burbank the next day. Cool!

The event was being held in a big complex that housed a dining hall, an ice rink, a bowling alley and a few other things. And it was busy. Our event was in a few rooms in the back of the complex and we managed to find it not from the lamely posted sign on the outside wall, but by a side door. A poorly guarded side door after walking nearly completely around the complex....in the rain.

It was nice just walking around and looking a much of the stuff that ws overpriced. One booth had these lovely fabric sample cards and one card had nearly 30 3x5" sample swatches on it. It was cool, but their price was $50 and I was not gonna pay that. Plus the lady looked at me like I didn't have any money, or didn't know what I was looking at. I hate when vendors try and size me up like that.

I didn't buy anything, just looked. I had never been to that textiles show and frankly I thought there would have been more textiles. It was mainly vintage clothing and quite a few sellers that I know were there from the other big vintage show in Santa Monica. I'm just glad I didn't pay to get in.

A friend called me and picked me up and we went to a local vintage clothing store called Playclothes. My friend had wanted to take me there for a while. It is indeed a wonderland. There are a lot of real good things there, fairly priced. I looked through their patterns, mostly 60s and their fabric, which was quite nice. I bought a couple of pattern and some flowered seersucker. Its already cleaned and ready to become a dress soon.

From there we went to a local vegan bar and I had beer and a 'sausage'. We both like that place.

This weekend was our monthly visit to church.

Well, Church of Sinatra. Its a monthly vintage cocktail party that around here is hosted by a friend of mine. Sometimes they are fun, often depending on the mood of the host. You know how drama can be. This time was more fin than usual because not only was the host in a good mood, it was also the 4 year anniversary of the LA branch, and he pulled out some great spirits.

I wore my newly finished 30's sport blouse and a RTW black linen skirt. I looked lovely :)

A real nice rum, and two types of absinthe. We ended up calling that 'bottle study'. It was great. There was just a good mood of all those gathered, so we all just went with it.

Today was the Santa Monica Vintage Expo, but I'm opting out of this go round.

I'm broke and because I went to the textile show last week, I feel like I've already seen most of what's there.

*whew*
I'm beat.
I'm just gonna chill the rest of the weekend and sew. Yeah, that sounds nice.

Make them all for $29.75!

I thought this image was great. An entire wardrobe for only $29.75! Or if you think of that today, an entire wardrobe for $455!

WOW!

Isn't sewing supposed to be cost effective? I know inflation in the 30s was through the roof, but wow, $455? I'm sure I could make all of those things for about $200 today.

How about you?

Blouses are done!

Happy Thursday everyone!

Just dropping in to say that I FINALLY put the buttons on my two latest blouses. For some reason I decided to finish the cuffs with snap fasteners. I think it worked well and I didn't have to do button holes.

For some reason the lazy of machine sewing overtook my non-lazy feeling of hand sewing... go figure.

I'll have more pictures on NVL soon.

Fat People on Television.

I don't watch much television. I gave mine up about five years ago when I took part in a TV turnoff week. It was great and I've in essence been commercial free from here on out. Add to that most shows are on DVD within 3 months of their season finale, and I'm a happy camper.

There are a handful of shows that I am able to catch online from time to time, and these have peaked my interest for a few main reasons. The first being the main characters are fat. The second being the women who are the main characters are fat, the third being the shows have prominent characters of color. I find all of the above interesting, because they are rarities.

The three recent shows that I want to chat about have aired or are still on the air. I mean I could go back into the history of body image and television but I don't know that much and frankly, I'm most interested in contemporary views of fat people on TV. American TV in particular. Yeah...

I'm going to chat about three that I really like: Huge, Mike & Molly, and a US import from across the pond, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.

Huge was fantastic.

It's based on a book (sorry I didn't read it) about a group of teens at a fat camp. The show, which aired on ABC Family of all places was rich, dynamic and just so well acted, so like with any good show on American TV, no one watches it and it gets canceled. Truth be told, I think the show got canceled because people were uncomfortable seeing fat teenagers with their shirts off.

I loved how they were so unapologetic about that. Showing the bodies of these teens over and over until we were comfortable with them, and in a way they were comfortable with themselves. I mean it's a summer camp. That means bathing suits and swimming and sunscreen and the like. But they are also teenagers, and that means cliques and rivalries and animosities and on and on. It wasn't just a teen show wrapped up in a fat camp, it was a show about people where for a few brief months, they all were in a place where they all looked the same, but still carried all those stigmas of the outside world with them.

You had the rebel loner, Will, who really did hate herself but was too proud to say so, the amazingly broken camp director, Dr. Rand (played by Gina Torres) who the show followed the most. I mean she made it, she's skinny, on the outside, but man there are some issues that woman had that you know she will never get over. The character I thought was interesting was the 'pretty' fat girl, Amber. She could 'pass'. She wasn't fat enough to be ostracized by regular kids, but she was overweight, and hated herself for it, yet all the other fat kids deemed her the prettiest girl there and everyone wanted to be her friend.

Rarely am I emotionally attached to a show. Rarely can I actually relate to so many characters. It was just so good, but I think ahead of it's time.

A current show I'm really liking is Mike & Molly.

I didn't care too much for the pilot on it's own because every other word out of the character's mouths were fat jokes, but once they got past that and the show hit it's stride, you see beyond what they look like, which is what you would do with anything you like. It's about a cop and a school teacher falling in love after meeting at an overeaters anonymous meeting. I mean its not a drama, it's a situation comedy, like Roseanne was, but the gimmick of this show is their weight, which I find weird.

It's like weight is becoming the new minority in American TV. You know how you would see a random black/asian/hispanic person in a TV show and just wonder how they got there? It's like "We need a new hook...fat people!"

By the by, I find it utterly refreshing that Mike & Molly has two black characters from different parts of the world in the cast. *Finally* a show is saying, 'Yes there are different kinds of black people all over the world.'

It seems that American television just can't get enough of the fat people lately. From reality shows of people loosing weight, one of the biggest (pun intended) ones just launched by A&E, Heavy

(**side note, I actually know the cover model for that show, we met at a friend's wedding**) to situation comedies where the weight seems to be the focus of the sitcom, fat people are hot right now.

Not since Roseanne has there been a fat male and FEMALE lead in a TV series. Heavy men, sure, from the Honeymooners to King of Queens to just about any other sitcom you can name, the hot wife with the lumpy hubby are standard tv fodder. But to see a lovely woman who isnt a supermodel paired up with a hot dude? Never happen. Or never will last.

But there is a huge problem I'm seeing with this surge of shows that you didn't see with other overweight characters in TV shows. All of the characters in these shows, all of them have eating disorders. Really? All fat people are food addicts in America? They all need meetings and therapy and support groups? None of them can control themselves? I think that's a big issue, and pretty offensive. Don't get me wrong, I really like the two shows I've mentioned, but just like America loves to do, highlight the extreme, all we get to see are fat people who need therapy for their eating. That's kind of sad.

It's a culture shock going from television that says fat people are a spectacle and need help because there is something wrong with them, to a show set in Africa where a fat person is just that, and there is nothing wrong with it.

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency isn't really about the size of the main character Precious Ramotswe (played by Jill Scott). Based on a series of books, its about her being a cunning, smart, and independent woman solving crimes. But you port that over to an American audience where you hear characters constantly say, 'fat', 'fatty', 'big', 'traditional build' in tandem with being attractive, and it probably short circuits people's brains!

You can't be a fat beautiful woman character. You can't be the competition against a skinny woman. You can't be pursued by amazingly attractive men. You can't be comfortable in what you look like and not be thin.

Not in American TV. Because here in our television shows weight as a problem to overcome, but in this show, its just a part of the culture. No, not everyone is going to be skinny. Some people just like to eat and it does not mean they have a problem with food. So its amazingly wonderful to see the character Jill Scott plays (who herself has had some weight issues in her own American career) be such a dynamic strong and attractive character in this show.

I guess this is where I send a shout out to Jennifer Hudson. Sweetie, you are not going to stay that size. You just won't.

I hope I am making since with this because I have been wanting to do this post for a long time. I can't really think of much else to add so I'll just leave this out in the aether. How do you feel about the way overweight/fat people are being highlighted in American TV? Any other TV shows (US or from another country) that have non skinny characters that you like?

I would love for this to generate some discussion because I would adore dialog on this.

January Pattern Showcase!!

I got my internets back!! I'm so elated. It's tough going without regular service, especially when you have an etsy store!
These were the emails that I got this month! WOW, I'm so popular! :)

This month I spent most of my pattern allowance on that great German Catalog. Don't worry, more of that will soon come.
But I did get some cool patterns.

The above Du Barry I thought was a stunner. Look at that bodice. Normally 40s Du Barrys are really bland, but I saw this one and just went wow! I'm also planning on making it up for the Air Raid.

I have my Warden outfit all together, but I did want to change into a dress for the evening. Now I have to think am I going to be able to scrape enough cash together for some wool crepe.

This 30's Customode I saw on the vintage Pattern Wiki when I was doing some random search. I was floored. NEVER expected to own my own copy. Yay patience!

This above one I'm thinking of making floor length.
After all, I do have a floor length gown deficit.

Even though I didn't get too many this past month, I did get some more great vintage rayon. It just seemed to fall into my life this January.

The left rayon is enough for the front of a blouse. Its a dark brown with blue hats on it. I KNOW!! The middle one I have enough for a skirt and the front bodice of a dress. The coral flowers I might have enough for a dress. I really like that fabric and got a good deal on it.

Oh! So much vintage fabric, so little time!
Happy sewing!
