Free 1930s pattern: The first NVL giveaway!!

Hi everyone.
It's time for a giveaway. My first real one in fact. As I mentioned in my sewing karma post a while back, I wanted to continue the generosity in which these patterns came into my life.

Up for grabs is this lovely turn of the decade Advance button front dress. Most likely dates from the late 1930s. I thought 1940 at the latest but I've been informed its most likely 1938 at the latest. I think thats cooler!

Its condition is apparent, but its complete and itching to be made into a lovely frock. Its measurements are 40b 32w 43h.

Now, what do you as a reader need to do for a chance to obtain this lovely? I'm making it pretty simple. I know a lot of people require that you follow their blog to be able to win. I'm not that demanding, although it would be nice.
I want to see a picture of your most accomplished sewing project!
Whether it was for you or someone else does not matter. Clothing or something else is perfectly alright. Vintage or not, does not matter, just your most acomplished. A brief description of the creation would be lovely. You can either post a link in this post, or use the flicker user group I have set up. I'll be checking it a few times daily. I created a special thread for this giveaway.

I'll look through the contestants and choose my favorite and announce it on September 27th. then send out your pattern to you! Easy enough, right?

Well, lets see those creations!

  1. This is the one I get the most compliments on (I think that's a good gauge?) I'm still learning a lot AND I definitely nitpicked the final product, but it's fun to wear and I do love it.

  2. My most accomplished job requires some explaination. Firstly in addition to these costumes there was 7 pirate outfits and 2 victorian jackets. Secondly I made them all with minimal help from others in about 2 months. Yup thats 7 pirates, 6 victorian ladies, 2 victorian men in 4 weeks. It was for an improvised theatre peice.

In line there is Justine in a belle epoch era skirt with a natural form skirt and petticoat (you can see that pocking out underneath the skirt - taht is her ironing not my sewing). Pamela in a butterick costume skirt and a waterfall bodice - bustle created by butt pillow not cage, Me in a fantail skirt, overskirt and bodice (the bodice was from ageless patterns and I vertually had to remake it to fit me) and I also made a petticoat, Ange in ageless patterns Belle epoch dress that also had to be vertually remade she also is wearing a petticoat. Then there is Deb in the butterick skirt with buttpillow and early bustle style polinasse, and lastly stacey in a self styled skirt, wash overskirt and altered bodice.

I finished 4am the morning before we were to wear them, but I do have to say we look fantastic and I was so proud of the work.

  3. My most accomplished sewing project is a 16th century German/Bohemian Renaissance outfit for historical reenactment. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3173/2747540163_6ceb2c5008_o.jpg Unfortunately, the only picture I have of it isn't very good. There is an undergown of white linen with hand done blackwork embroidery in silk floss at the neckline, a boned underbodice, proto-corset type garment, brocade gown with velvet cuffs and neckline trim. The headress consists of a wire and buckram shaped base, covered in linen. The picture doesn't show it, but there are pearl studded pins holding the linen to the buckram, giving the back a sort of quilted look.

  4. My most accomplished is my 1890s reproduction walking dressed based on Janet Arnold's measurements. The undergarments are not shown, but also vintage reproductions - a form-fitting corset to adjust the body to fit the dress, and a bustle and a full petticoat. The dress was cut out of silk noil. The hat was my first attempt at building hats, and not perfect, but really added something to the whole outfit. http://e2d2.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/dsc_0188.jpg My favorite part is probably the lobster-back http://e2d2.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/dsc_0190.jpg

  5. I posted this to flickr, but since everyone is posting here mostly here is the link to my entry- http://www.flickr.com/photos/7417129@N03/5010958344/

It is an Italian courtesan dress I made (with input from a friend and costumer at the time) based on costumes from the movie Dangerous Beauty. There are 8 yards of fabric in the bustle alone and the bodice and stomacher are fully boned. The dress weighs roughly 15 lbs.

It was for a group I directed and sang in at the Bristol Renaissance Faire called the Consorte Bella Donna.

  6. I love your site and I hope to someday be an equally accomplished seamstress. Everything you make looks like it was made in the original era and fits you perfecly! Enough sucking up...! I have only been sewing for two years and the project I love the most was from a vintage dog coat pattern for my little four-legged girl. I swore I would never put her in a silly coat, but when her arthritis got bad this Melbourne winter, I decided to make a stylish one. Here's a link to my blog post with pics (it's also on Sew Retro): http://turnipsandtoile.blogspot.com/2010/07/mai-lis-new-coat.html

She knows she looks good when she wears it!

  7. I am going to the Marching Through History Event at Prado Park on October 2 and 3. I am part of a dance group and I needed a new dress. Pushing the deadline, as I work 7 to 7 during the week, I finished the out fit a few minutes ago.

The blue dress is in the Robe Anglaise style. Hook and eye front closing bodice with an attached open skirt, 4 yards of material pleated into the bottom edge of ¾ of the bodice. The front of the skirt is open to show the petticoat (underskirt). The sleeves fold back to form self-cuffs.

The challenge: This dress is designed for people with small breasts and waists. I am a size 18 apple shaped woman with very narrow shoulders and ample breasts and waist. It took 6 paper patterns and 3 fabric muslins to get a good fit.

The petticoat is a simple gathered shirt with hook and eye closure. 3 yards of material hand pleated into a waistband. The pattern is called Gramercy Park. Roses on a light yellow background.

The chemise is a simple T with a drawstring neckline and long sleeves to protect me from the sun.
